The Million Dollar Duck Race
During the first week of this month, New York Lottery sponsored the Million Dollar Duck Race at the South Street Seaport to benefit the Special Olympics of New York. For a $5 donation (per duck), one was entitled to "adopt" a rubber duckie, be entered into the race, and have a chance to win great prices.
Like everyone else, we didn't care about winning the latest gadgets and free airline tickets. We wanted the big kahuna! We were pretty certain that one of our 5 adopted ducks was the lucky Million Dollar Duck.
Radio Disney being one of the events' sponsor, the small crowd of tweeners were in for a special treat when the Jonas Brothers showed up to promote the race. S knew a few of their songs so P asked if she was interested in having her pic taken with the trio. We were floored when she scowled, snorting: "Nah, I'm too young for that."
I'm hoping that 5 years from now, she'd still prefer the company of ducks to teenage boys.
Year 3000 video:
By 6 PM, the ducks were launched into the East River South of the Brooklyn Bridge - and the race was on!
It was a tight beak-to-beak battle among 25,000 bright yellow quackers.
If only Ernie could see them all...
And the winner's being scooped up!
"Five dollars and a dream" - that's all it took.
